I always find it hard to go through and put away the most recent set of clothes that the kids have outgrown. There is something a little sad about seeing the little piles of clothes that they won’t wear again, as if I am neatly folding pieces of their childhood away. There are many clothes which end up in the pile for the local consignment store, or for Goodwill, but there are always the ones that I can’t bear to part with. A set of pajamas that remind me of snuggly bedtime routines, or a summer t-shirt that still carries the faint odor of sunscreen. These clothes I put in storage boxes in the attic. I don’t know what I’ll do with them in the future. I really like the idea of making quilts out of them one day, but right now I know I would be unable to cut into the cloth.

I think I’ll miss “Hey Dude!” and “Ladies Man” the most. ~smile

Love the ladies man shirt!
I definitely think you should make these into a quilt when the time is right.
My friend’s mom is a quilter and my most favorite quilt of hers is the 5×5″ patchwork quilt that she made for her husband with all of my friend and her sister’s childhood clothing
Jennifer,
I always get sentimental putting clothes away too. My Mom saved all my dresses in her college trunk intending to make them into a quilt. When it came time for me to go to college, my Dad got the trunk down and she reminisced, it was a really sweet moment. I’m not sure what she’s done with them but if this one is a girl – they might be showing up again.
She also saved my coming home from the hospital outfit – so with Ethan we brought my outfit and Jeff’s to the hospital to bring the baby home in. Guess I need to find a new little boy outfit for coming home….
As someone who really wanted a dress-up box when I was little I have been saving clothes for *future child* for a while. If Moira is anything like me she will appreciate me saving some of her things for if/when she decides to have children. Of course I can’t save everything and I have the luxury right now of assuming we are having a second child someday but even when I put clothes away I think: this might only get worn by one other baby and then what? Sometimes I’m a sentimental fool.
You know I claim to be anti-sentimental about the kids growing up and getting bigger, but I will admit to being sentimental about some of their clothes. I still have Timo’s favorite helicopter rescue shirt that he wouldn’t give up until he was 4, Meg’s “Can’t Sleep – Clowns Will Eat Me” onesie, and several of the girls’ prettiest dresses.
And I too will miss the Hey Dude! shirt. I think I may just have to insist that you find him a larger one.
I have an 8 week old baby boy and hes growing out of so many of his clothes now. Il use them for any future sons (if we are so blessed) but then i will probably make a patchwork quilt out of them so that i can see them every day. Much better than having them put away in the attic dont you think?
Love your blog by the way, il probably try and read it from start to finish!
Please come back again soon!

I know this feeling.
I have a blue mountain, by which I mean I have a blue throw covering a mountain of tiny through to tot sized clothing that my little girl has outgrown.
I cant bear to part with them yet, something in me just cant bear to bag them up and give them to the charity stores, or sell them on ebay.
I love your idea of the quilt though, perhaps, one day, I will take the time to sort through and make up a special pile of clothes that I could make my own quilt with.
Love to you
